Day 1 Monday, July 24 (92°)

Today is the first day of the 2017 national meet.  A few athletes arrived
in Lawrence KS over the weekend and continue to arrive today.  Speed
Unlimited enjoyed a quiet evening meal together at the hotel.  Competition
for our SpeedU athletes begins tomorrow.


Day 2 Tuesday, July 25 (96°)

Our first athletes hit the track today in the 11-12 girls 4x800m relay of Kira B, Sabrina C, Catherine K and Talia W. The girls came in ranked 20th and left in15th place with a 15 second PR and a time of 11:27.63.

We will be back at the track early tomorrow with Javelin, 400mH, 800 and
200m races.


Day 3 Wednesday, July 26 (80° w/ torrential rains and thunderstorms)

Nicaia started off the day in the Javelin area with a first (and best) throw of 16.42m about 2m off her personal best. Nicaia finished in 42nd overall and will be back tomorrow in the 4x100m.

Regina ran a great 400mH race in lane one with a time of 1:06.10 near her personal best and good for a 15th place finish overall. (7 places higher than her seed).

Rain started to fall today leading to a meet delay of 30mins due to lightning. Our 800m runners initially delayed – by 2 full hours, were up next. Kira took to the track first finishing in 37th place overall with a time of 2:42.74. Josh ran 2:39.20 for 45th overall. Both improved their standing in the rankings.

Faith was up next in the 13-14 girls race. She finished in 2:24.36 and 17th place overall moving up 10 places in the standing. Anthony ran 2:10.00 with a new PR for 22nd place overall moving him up 25 places in the rankings!

Christina ran next also improving her ranking by 5 spots. She finished in 2:25.14 for 21st place overall. Elena finished in 9th narrowly missing the final in a time which was not her personal best. Luke wrapped up our 800m racing, winning his heat and setting a new PR of 1:54.46. Luke will race in the 800m final on Saturday going in as the 1st seed.

Jett got his best throw of the day out first at 26.73m. He finished in 30th overall.

Makena lead off the 200m sprinters with a time of 26.27 good for 20th place and a spot in the Semi Final. Anthony was up next finishing in 31st place with a time of 24.77 narrowly off his PR. Ethan heard an odd echo and slowed after the start thinking it was a false start. He got right back to sprinting but it was too late. He ran himself back into 5th in his meet and finished overall in 31st.  Even with the mishap he ran 22.89. Kemuel won his heat with a time of with a time of 21.95 and heads into the semi final as the 6th seed.

We will be back at the track tomorrow with Javelin and shot put in the field, 1500m, short hurdles, 100m prelims, 200m semis and the 4x100m prelim.


Day 4 Thursday,  July 27 (82°)

Aaliyah was our competitor this morning in the 9-10 girls Javelin throw.  She finished in 14th overall at her first ever national meet, improving her rank by 2 places. Malu threw in the 4th and final flight of the Javelin. She set a new PR of 24.69m breaking her own SpeedU club record and finishing in 6th place for our first All-American of the week.

Julia won her 1500m heat and heads into the final as the 4th seed. Followed by Faith who improved her ranking by 8 places finishing in 15th (3 spots outside the final). Christina was next finishing 5th in her heat with a PR of 5:01.79, good for 15th place (also 3 spots outside the final). Elian was next running a new PR of 4:24.43 and moving up 7 places in the standings to 25th. Luke was our last 1500m runner on the track this morning. He wrapped up the action for SpeedU winning his heat and heading into the final as the 4th seed.

HannahG took second in her heat to advance to the semi-final in 7th place overall. Matt had a good 100mH in tough conditions. He ran 15.14 comparable to his PR moving up 1 rank to 30th place.

We shifted focus mid-day back to the Javelin to watch Brooks who finished 22nd overall in his first ever national meet. Hanna threw a PR of 7.82m in the Shot Put moving up 8 places in the standings to finish in 39th

Hannah G was back on the track in the 100m Prelim. She ran a time of 12.33 just off her personal best for 30th place. Kemuel ran 10.87 missing the 100m semi finishing in 35th.

In the 200m Semi, Mak ran 25.61 near her personal best to finish her season in 19th place. Kemuel struggled with the start in the 200m semi running 21.49 and finishing in 11th overall.

Our 11-12 Girls team of Jana, Thea, Nicaia and Hanna started our 4×100 relay action for the evening. The girls finished in 26th place overall with a time comparable to Regionals. Next up was the 11-12 boys team of Azad, Ishe, Makoa and Mason the finished 24th in a time of 55.03.  The 13-14 girls team of Mak, Maddy, Jaylin and Nichole finished 5th in their heat and set a new PR of 51.08, good for 17th overall. The 13-14 boys team of Branden, Gabe, Jenson and Anthony finished in 23rd place with a time of 49.30 wrapping up our action for the day.

Back on the track tomorrow with long jump, javelin, 400M prelims, and 4x400M relay prelims.



Day 5 Friday 7/28 (80°)

Gabe got us started this morning in the Javelin. His best throw of 32.82m was good enough to improve his ranking by 4 places to 36th.

When the 400m racing started early in the AM, Caden did not have his usual spring. He finished in 48th with a time off his personal best. Mak ran 59.33 for 26th place and an improvement of 3 places in the rankings. Anthony set a new PR of 55.02 for 32nd place. Ethan was 3rd in his heat, finishing just out of the top-8 finals qualifiers in 12th with a time of 49.55. Elena finished off our 400m action setting a new PR of 58.66, moving up 14 places in the standings for 24th place!

The 9-10 boys 4×400 team of Caden, Brooks, Connor and Quinten finished 6th in their heat and ran a PR but were DQ’ed due to a lane violation. Meanwhile Jaylin was in the long jump.  Unfortunately she fouled 2 jumps and had to settle for a 4.17 mark significantly off her personal best.

The 13-14 girls team of Nichole, Jaylin, Julia and Mak ran 4:09.69 finishing 3rd in their heat and  12th overall. The 13-14 boys team of Jensen, Will, Sam and Matt were next running 4:04.55 for 6th in their heat and 23rd overall. The 15-16 girls team of HannahG, Thayer, Christina and Regina were up next. The girls ran 4:08.63 for 4th in their heat and 21st overall. The 15-16 boys team of Xavius, Kishin, Elian and Ethan ran a new PR of 3:33.50 for 19th overall and an improvement of 6 places.

The athletes will resume competition tomorrow with discus, long jump, the 3000m, 100m hurdle semi-finals and the 800m final.



Day 6 Saturday 7/29 (78°)

Hanna got us started early this morning in the Discus.  She had a throw off her personal best but still improved her ranking to 30th.

In the 3000m races Julia ran a blazing 10:05.50 for 2nd place, a new Region 13 JO Record! Miri ran a time just off her Regional PR for 22nd place.

Over in the Long Jump pit Azad fouled his first and third jumps but set a new PR of 4.97.  That was good enough to send him to the final and an 8th place finish!

Hannah finished 2nd in her heat with a PR of 14.86 and heads into tomorrow’s final in 6th place.

In the 800m final Luke finished 2nd with a new PR 1:54.31.

Thea finished up the day for SpeedU. She could not find her consistent approach, nor the same PR she jumped at Regionals. She finished in 50th place.

Tomorrow Sunday is the last day of competition.  For Speed Unlimited we will have athletes in the long jump, 1500m Final, and 100mH.


Day 7 Sunday 7/30 (84°)

Caden started us off this morning in the long jump with a new PR of 3.94 improving his ranking by 15 places to 21st. Quinten set a new PR in the 1500m of 5:26.50 good for 31st place moving up 13 places in the standings!  Connor also set a new PR of 5:36.17 good for 47th place overall.

HannahG ran 14.89 a great and consistent for 8th place in the 100mH final.

Julia took 2nd in the the 1500m with a hotly contested a time of 4:40.30.  Luke wrapped up competition for Speed Unlimited in the 1500m with another 2nd place finish.  He broke his own SpeedU team record and 4 mins with a new PR of 3:59.29!


All-in, it was  a great week for Speed Unlimited.

  • 34 top 25 finishers
  • 23 top 20 finishers (Elite Youth All- American standard)
  • 8 top 10 finishers (Elena 9th in 800)
  • 7 Top-8 USATF All-American medalists (Malu Jav, Azad LJ, Luke 800, Luke 1500, Julia, 1500, Julia 3000, Hannah 100mH)
  • 3 new club team records (Luke 800, Luke 1500, Malu Jav)
  • 1 new Regional record (Julia 3K)
Congratulations again to all of our SpeedU athletes who traveled to Lawrence Kansas to compete!
